The island of Haiti, as it was originally known, h The island of Haiti, as it was originally known, has been a cradle of revolution since the earliest recorded history by its invaders. The 1519 Revolution, widely acknowledged as Enriquillo’s Revolt, is part of the larger history of the Americas’ first revolution by enslaved people during 1500-1534. Named after the Taino cacique Guarocuya of the province of Jaragua, who was the grandnephew of the cacica Anacaona, he was their leader, and was known as “Enriquillo” and also “Enrique” by the Spaniards. In 1519 he removed himself and some of his people from the reach of Spanish authority in the island of Haiti then called Hispaniola by the colonizers. For nearly a decade and a half he and his followers lived in the south-central mountains of the island. From 1519 to 1533, the native Taínos were joined by a group of Africans, likely Wolof maroons, to assert their independence. Their uprising on Christmas Day 1521, became the first recorded revolt in the Americas. By the mid-1520s, the Spaniards were confined to the capital city of Santo Domingo or its immediate environs, with the rest of the island dominated by the African and Taino rebels. It was the first revolution by enslaved people in the Americas, and the first known instance when Africans and Natives of the Americas united against their oppressors.

Celebrating the birthday of Jean-Jacques Dessaline Celebrating the birthday of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Emperor Jacques 1 of Haiti. In 1791, Jean-Jacques Dessalines joined the uprising that would become the Haitian Revolution.
In 1802, he became the leader of the revolution, and defeated the French army at the Battle of Vertières in 1803.
On 1 January 1804, from the city of Gonaïves, he officially declared the former colony's independence and renamed it Haiti "Ayiti" after the indigenous Taíno name.
He declared Haiti an independent country, and abolished slavery in the new country. Haiti became the first country in the Americas to permanently abolish slavery, and he kept the sugar industry and plantations running and producing without slavery.
He emphasized regulation of foreign trade, which was essential for Haiti's sugar and coffee based export economy.
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was named Jacques I, Emperor of Haiti on 22nd of September, 1804, by the generals of the Haitian Revolution Army and he ruled in that capacity until 1806.
On May 20 1805, he promulgated a new constitution, altering the colors of the flag from blue representing Haiti's black citizens and the red the free people of color, to black and red.

We are celebrating the 229th anniversary of the Bo We are celebrating the 229th anniversary of the Bois Caïman ceremony through the month of August!
We are commemorating August 14, 1791, and the start of the Haitian Revolution with limited edition Bwa Kayiman labels for our coffee bags.
Bois Caiman, in the Nord dept. of Haiti, is the site of the Vodou ceremony of August 14, 1781 where the first major insurrection of the Haitian Revolution was planned. The Revolution would begin on August 22, 1791 and end in January of 1804. During the ceremony officiated by mambo Cecile Fatiman assisting houngan Dutty Boukman from Jamaica, a black Creole pig was sacrificed to Ezili Dantor to make a blood pact. The indigenous pig was domesticated centuries earlier by the Tainos who had fled to the high mountains to escape the Spanish colonial genocide. Ezili Dantor is considered to be the lwa of vengeance & rage, and the mother of Haiti, originally from the Dahomey Amazon culture. 1800 plantations were destroyed and 1000 slaveholders killed in the week following the ceremony at Bwa Kayiman. We are grateful to our ancestors who initiated the Revolution and proud to commemorate their contributions as we energize ourselves with Haitian coffee!

We launched Cantave de Saint Marc continuing a vis We launched Cantave de Saint Marc continuing a vision from our ancestors, to share the delight of Haitian coffee with the world and support farmers who are uplifting their communities. Historically, coffee as a cash crop facilitated Haiti’s independence, by providing the $21 billion extortion fee that France had imposed on the nation in 1825; intending to cripple the the first Black republic economically. Coffee export continued to finance public works and infrastructure in Haiti through the 1940s. Haitian coffee provided the economic foundation that helped our family flourish, and we are proud to now help bring it back to a wider market. Haiti once supplied over half of the world’s coffee, we encourage you to try these beans and find out why!
