We partner with farmers who are committed to reforestation in Haiti. Each bag of coffee represents one new tree planted in Haiti. Coffee tree roots hold soil in place and they are co-planted with fruit (i.e. coffee, lime, & banana growing together as shown above) to provide shade and additional crops. ☕️ 🍌 🍋 🌳

Growing up in Haiti, coffee is very much part of p

Growing up in Haiti, coffee is very much part of people’s culture from children to the oldest people. I am used to drinking Haitian coffee from as early as I could hold my own cup. I grew up in a community where farmers like my grandfather were respected for their contribution to the community, and crops like coffee, cotton, and more made the local economy flourish.

Later in life I discovered a restaurant called “Haiti” in Japan and the only things they served that were Haitian were coffee & rum. Later on, touring in Europe, I discovered that Haitian coffee is also a sought-after specialty there. In Jamaica I discovered that their prized Blue Mountain coffee is actually derived from the same beans/type that was first grown in Haiti.

Ever since then I’ve felt the need to make the case for Haitian coffee in the US. About four years ago I found a source to import green Haitian coffee and we decided to put all that we can into bringing Haitian coffee to America, roasting it locally, and making the case for it in this market. We’ve been very pleased that everyone who tries it finds that Haitian coffee is indeed exceptional! 📸: @ultraclay

This September, we are offering one bag each of our Kafe Miel & Kafe Sid-Ès together for $25 on our website.
Both single-origin Coffee beans originate from the Sud-Èst department of Haiti which has undergone much devastation recently and has been a focus in international news.
The Sud-Èst (Sidès) department of Haiti has numerous rivers, springs and ponds. It is an area with a set of microclimates which allow for the farming of diverse crops which has proven to be optimal for coffee production.
Its capital city Jacmel is a World Heritage Site. Jacmel is one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean and was dubbed the "City of Light" in 1925, when it became the first to have electricity.
Its historic architecture of the colonial era influenced that of New Orleans.
Jacmel is also the location where Venezuela’s flag was created and first flown in 1806.
We invite you to taste two treasures of Ayiti’s Sidès department with our 2 organically-grown single-origin coffees from that area through the month of September.

August 23rd is commemorated as The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first celebrated in a number of countries, in particular in Haiti (23 August 1998) and Goree in Senegal (23 August 1999).

From Toussaint L’ouverture’s state-owned plantations, to backing the Haitian Gourdes currency and financing the exploitative extortions of France, coffee has played a major role in the liberation of Haiti and the Haitian people continue to thrive from this foundation. 📸: @ultraclay

From the 1950s, the U.S. supported political regimes and policies that discouraged the population involved in agriculture works, looted hundreds of millions of dollars and were responsible for the death or disappearance of over 30,000 people using death squads trained by the U.S.
The current Haitian coffee industry has experienced natural disasters, centuries of deforestation, and United States-led embargoes; however, it is recently experiencing an increase in the world coffee scene amongst socially-aware consumers, and proving to be advantageous for small-scale Haitian farmers as a specialty coffee.
Shade-growing coffee helps communities improve their ecosystems as trees become valuable components.
Coffee’s wide shallow roots create a mesh that helps hold topsoil in place, while trees with deeper roots bring water closer to the surface, and taller fruit trees contribute the needed shade.
All of our coffee at Cantave de Saint Marc is organically shade-grown in Haiti, co-planted with banana, plantain, avocado, almond, & citrus trees.
We launched Cantave de Saint Marc continuing a vision from our ancestors, to share the delight of Haitian coffee with the world and support farmers who are uplifting their communities.

In the dialogue of Haitian history and current events, coffee is a national treasure that has been a source of empowerment and independence since the early 1800s.
Haitian founding leader Toussaint Louverture established a fermage system of state-owned plantations for coffee; Jean-Jacques Dessalines emphasized regulation of foreign trade for Haiti's sugar and coffee based export economy; Henri Christophe established the Haitian currency “gourdes” based on revenue from coffee trade. Coffee has been an element of Haitian wealth as well as being a major staple of Haiti's economy ever since.
As a cash crop, coffee allowed Haiti to pay a $21 billion extortion fee that France had imposed on the nation in 1825, and by 1850 coffee was again a major export of Haiti.
In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson sent troops who occupied Haiti until 1934. The U.S. confiscated Haiti's gold reserves and imposed racial segregation, forced labor, and a militarized police force.
Coffee export continued to finance public works and infrastructure in Haiti through the 1940s. In 1949 Haiti was the world's third major coffee producer. (📸: @ultraclay )

Colonizers in Haiti cleared virgin forests for valuable timber (mahogany etc) and to create space for plantation agriculture. These destructive practices were continued under the United States occupation of Haiti 1915-1934, devastating Haiti’s tree cover, rainfall, and erosion. The deforestation is often blamed on rural charcoal production but the problem is much more complex. Today Haitian farmers are key players in reforestation.
